Tag tournament great success
Nearly 60 Year 6 to Year 8 competed in a Schools Tag tournament on Wednesday 30th November. Although the wind made it a cold afternoon everyone enjoyed the event and wanted to come back next week. Seriously though more events to come as look out for a all girls tag tournament in the summer.

Cheshire battled well in county game
Sandbach RUFC played host to the first leg of the Northern Counties Trophy yesterday, and witnessed Lancashire out-class a resilient Cheshire team 46-3.
Cheshire, whose squad had been primed by Coach Vicky Reeve for several sessions prior to the game, showed an obvious determination and organisation as they battled gamely through the first half. Crunching tackles and a great drift defence saw Cheshire restrict Lancs to only three tries and two conversions.
Cheshire had selected a mixed squad of relative new-comers and experienced players for the game, but when a team whose members play at North 1 standard come up against a team of players, many of whom are quite at home in the Premiership, then there weren't too many glimmers of hope for the second half.
Cheshire rose to the challenge however and despite Lancs deliberately killing the ball any time Cheshire threatened their try line, they were finally rewarded with some points when Eleni Smith kicked a penalty with 10 minutes to go. Lancs comfortably won the match but Team Manager Vicky Brookes said afterwards, "I was delighted with the effort and commitment shown by the Cheshire Team today and we've got a lot of good things to take forward into the next match against Yorkshire".
A BIG thank you goes to Sandbach RUFC for their organisation and hosting of the game, and we hope as many supporters will turn up to the away game against Yorkshire on Sunday 4th December [Venue TBD]

County match to set up big day for Women’s rugby
On 13th November 2005 the first round of the “Northern Counties Trophy” will be fought between Cheshire and Lancashire Senior Women’s squads. This clash will take place at 2.30pm at Sandbach Rugby Club, Bradwall Road and using their experience last year at Sale Sharks, girls from Sandbach Junior team will be acting as ball girls for the game.

The Cheshire squad is made up of Women from Altrincham Kersal, Chester, Heaton Moor, Manchester & Northwich whilst the Lancashire squad draws on players from the Vale of Lune, Preston, Colne and Nelson, Bolton and Fleetwood. Cheshire Team Manager Vicky Brooks (also Northwich Ladies team coach) said, : “Since the trials at the county championships in September the women have been training hard for Sunday’s game. I’m looking forward to a great game of rugby and hopefully a win for Cheshire”.

During the morning Sandbach have invited U14 and U17 teams from all over Lanchasire and Cheshire and hope to field equivalent county games at each of these levels. KO’s are planned for 1 pm. For more information please contact Martyn Hurlestone-Johnson on Martyn.Hurlstone-Johnson@kjd.co.uk or Tel: 07917 541234. Entry will be £2 on the gate and the bar opens at midday. Food and hot drinks are also available. Everybody is welcome.

U14 & U17 girls to join forces with Sandbach girls
This season Northwich Girls U17 & U14 players will join forces with Sandbach girls to form a new Mid Cheshire squad. The new squad promises to be one the best in the region with players from both Northwich and Sandbach who represented the North West Region and played in last years teams who won a number of tournaments and the North West Merit League. The first fixture will be at Buxton on Sunday 16th October. Match reports and pictures will be coming soon. Please come along and support.

Promoted
This season (2005-6) Northwich Ladies will be playing in the RFUW North Division 1 League after winning the North West Division 3 last season. This will mean the Ladies will be doing a little more travelling than last year with matches as far a field as Scunthorpe and Carlisle. As the top league for teams based in the North of England, the other consequence is that the playing standard will be higher. The challenge to Northwich will of course be to step up their game and level of fitness to compete at this level. They will be looking for additional sponsorship as well as support for their home and away matches so please try to get down to Moss Farm on Sunday afternoons. Of course it would help if we had more players so if you are interested in playing or supporting please contact Yvonne (see above for details). The first home league match will be on September 25th, so we look forward to seeing you down there. This will be the first match ever played at Moss Farm at this level of Ladies Rugby.
For details of the fixtures and results so far please see the Ladies Team page.

Ladies narrowly miss out in final
Northwich Ladies put up a fine performance in the Northwich Festival Ladies 10's Rugby competition. They had to beat the high flying "Camp Hill" team from the Midlands to win the event having beaten Whitchurch in a thrilling encounter. The 2 teams had scored 5 tries a piece, Northwich taking an early lead and looking like they were going to run away with the game, only to be pinned back by some clever kicking from Whitchurch and some great runs from their wingers. Whitchurch leveled with 2 unconverted tries of their own. Northwich then broke the defensive line and scampered under the posts for a full 7 pointer just before the half. Whitchurch must put some good stuff in their half time oranges as they came out firing in the second half and had quickly run up 2 tries. However Northwich stuck to their task and eventually pulled the try count level with some storming play from lock Yvonne Bradley and Fly Half Vicky. At the final whistle, it was Vickies boot which had made the difference - 5 tries a piece, but 3 conversions for Northwich.
Northwich then had to beat Camp Hill to win the event, however, it was clear that the Camp Hill side were well drilled and were used to playing together. Northwich probably played the better rugby, but Camp Hill just soaked up the attacks and then hit on the counter. In the end Northwich had to give best to larger squad and a more experienced side.
However no one was down hearted and as many of the ladies had elected to camp over, they hit the evening entertainment starring Irish Folk Band "The Bogtrotters" with gusto. Camp Hill may have had to give best to injuries on the field, but their captain was determined that they would win the "party animal" of the weekend prize.

Girls win Gold at Cheshire Youth Games
A Vale Royal representative team made up exclusively from Northwich U14 Girls won this years’ Girls Tag Rugby Tournament at the Cheshire Youth Games on Saturday June 25th. A magnificent performance all round with tries from all the players left no doubt who would be winners. This is the third year a Vale Royal team have entered the tournament and they have been so close in the past. This time though a combination of experience, speed and determination won through. Well done girls.

Ladies are Champions!
It got very complicated at the end but thanks to a great team effort and consistent approach throughout the season Northwich Ladies are worthy “NorthWest 3 League champions”! The final results table and match scores have now finally been officially released on the RFUW web site (see below for the links). The final placing sees Northwich narrowly beating its main rival Leigh to top spot on points difference, after winning the same number of matches. However the story behind the placing is more complex especially with a number of league games where teams withdrew. However it is Northwich’s much superior points difference that has won through despite actually losing to Leigh in a close encounter in May. The RFUW will be organising the new league tables for next season over the next few weeks. So until then its not clear which league Northwich will be playing in come September. However what is sure though, is that the team did a great job, well done and good luck for next season. See the team below with the League Trophy.

Press Release
Girls Rugby comes to Cheshire
Next season Northwich will bring girls rugby to Cheshire for the first time. The club have announced plans to create the first U16 girls team in the county and will start competitive matches in September 2004.
Girls from Northwich’s existing junior section will join recruits from Cheshire secondary schools to form a new squad which will start training in February. To help build a successful side Northwich have put an experienced coaching team together and will plan to play other clubs in the North West, North Wales and the Midlands.
Although not as popular as mens’ rugby, girls and women’s rugby is played across the UK with over 10,000 players in England alone. There are now 70 U16 girl’s teams in England, and this number is growing all the time.
“While we have been out coaching in schools throughout Cheshire, we have seen such a tremendous level of interest in girls rugby” says Phil Clarke, Northwich RUFC Chief coach and Sport Cheshire RDO. “Up until now though, as there is no girls school rugby and no clubs in the area with girls teams, there was nowhere locally for the girls to follow their interest. Girls have often had to travel long distances to train and play.”
“At Northwich we want to bring girls rugby here for the long term and develop a full range of teams to harness the interest and already high standard of achievement of girl players across Cheshire and surrounding areas”, says Northwich Junior Chairman Simon Bridle.
Northwich will be working closely with Vale Royal District Council and Sport Cheshire to ensure that the Moss Farm sports complex has adequate facilities for this influx of players. “We are delighted to support Northwich with this new venture”, says Chris Bottomley head of VRDC Leisure Services. “Girls football has grown enormously over the past 2 years and we’d love girls rugby to expand as well.”
Northwich’s first activity to promote the new squad will be a girls Tag tournament on February 12th in conjunction with Sport Cheshire. This will be followed by a ‘Tag to Contact’ Development day on March 6th and an official launch in April with an exhibition match and VIP reception.

If you’d like to come along and try rugby or just want more information try the Northwich special girls web site (http://www.northwichgirlsrugby.couk) or call Phil Clarke at 01606 781441.

Girls Year 7-10 Tournament coming soon!
Northwich Rugby Club and Sport Cheshire will be hosting a Girls Tag rugby tournament at Moss Farm on February 12th. Eighteen schools across Cheshire have already agreed to take part. There’s still room for more teams if your school is interested. As it is a Tag tournament there is no contact or srummages just a great afternoon playing against other schools in the area. Spectators, parents and supporters are all welcome. Contact Phil Clarke for more details on 01606 781441 or email: pclarke@northwichrufc.co.uk.

Vale Royal Rugby excels at Games!
Vale Royal rugby players had a great day at the Cheshire Youth Games on Saturday June 28th at Macclesfield Rugby Club. Closely fought all day Vale Royal came home as winners of the Mixed Year 5/6 Tag tournament with third place in both the girls Years 7-10 and Boys Year 8 competitions.
Macclesfield Rugby Club proved a great setting for the event with the teams participating from seven Cheshire boroughs including Chester, Crewe & Nantwich, Congleton, Ellesmere Port & Neston, Macclesfield & Warrington. End to end rugby throughout the day kept up the excitement for the players, coaches and supporting parents alike. Even VIP’s, including local MP’s Ann and Nicholas Winterton joined in to support the players in the afternoon sessions.
With all the games closely contested and with a number of draws the league positions for all competitions weren’t certain until the final games were completed. In the year 5/6 Tag event Vale Royal beat Chester by superior try difference, while the girls missed out on being runners-up only by a single try.
Thanks go to everyone for a wonderful day including of course all the players for their commitment to prepare and to work hard on the day, to the coaches and to those who helped organise the event itself.
This year Northwich Rugby Club not only provided coaching help with all age groups but players from Northwich were well represented at all levels. Well done everyone.

Northwich Girls have fun day at Eccles tournament
A sweltering day in June saw a Northwich Girls team take on girls and ladies teams throughout the North West in a tag tournament at Eccles Rugby Club. The size, strenght and age of the other teams, some of them with sons and daughters older than most of the Northwich squad!, could have easily fazed the Northwich squad but they performed very well winning two of the their four matches and narrowly losing out on runners up spot. Well done everyone, great experience for next season.

Northwich Girls get International coaching
Five of Northwich's RUFC youngsters received top grade coaching recently from the USA Under 23's Ladies team at a coaching clinic run by the UK's Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW). Girls rugby in the North West received a boost recently with the appointment of a dedicated development officer for Greater Manchester and with the USA Under 23's Ladies team currently touring England, it was a great chance for the youngsters to meet the players and sharpen their skills. All the girls play regulary for the Northwich RUFC club in mixed junior sides and usually are coached alongside boys in their age groups. However at the clinic they joined 60 other girls from the Cheshire, Merseyside & Greater Manchester areas for expert tuition from the USA team, coaches from the RFUW and players from the Sale Sharks Premiership Rugby club. Everyone enjoyed the experience, Sale's hospitality and an exciting match between Sale Sharks and fellow premiership side Newcastle Falcons later that evening.
